Graduate Software Developer

Under the InterTradeIreland FUSION programme Nautical Enterprise has teamed up with the University of Ulster to carry out a software development project.

Currently there is a niche in the provision of decision support capabilities to the European transport industry and European policy makers. These decisions require accurate interregional cargo movement data throughout the EU and the modelling of transport businesses. Nautical Enterprise has developed a verifiable methodology and accompanying software tool set for carrying out such tasks. The project will extend and refine the existing tool set to include additional capabilities.

Job description

Reporting to the Company Supervisor, you will be employed by Nautical Enterprise Centre Ltd as a Software Developer to lead the FUSION project. You will be responsible for ensuring that it is brought to a successful conclusion with the support from your supervisors. This is an exciting opportunity for a graduate to gain excellent industrial experience through a structured and planned programme of work. In addition to the daily support of a Company Supervisor, a dedicated member of University of Ulster with expertise in the project area will spend half a day per week on average supporting the project. Additional support will also be given to the Graduate by a FUSION Consultant responsible for ensuring that all projects run according to schedule.

Main Duties

  • To manage the FUSION project
  • To carry out the tasks outlined in the original workplan developed by the company and academic partnership
  • To enable the transfer of technology, knowledge and skills between academia and industry
  • To report formally on a quarterly basis on progress to a Project Management Group which includes the assigned FUSION Consultant representing InterTradeIreland
  • To liaise effectively with your Company Supervisor on a regular basis
  • To liaise effectively with your Academic Supervisor to ensure that the required expertise is being provided to the project
  • To convene and service monthly technical meetings with the core project team (Graduate, Company Supervisor and Academic Supervisor)
  • To direct the necessary forward planning for the success of the project
  • To train staff so that the new technology is fully embedded in the company
  • To attend Postgraduate Diploma in Management Practice delivered by Smurfit School in UCD
  • To assist with the preparation of a project Final Report required by InterTradeIreland
  • Any other duties which might fall within the general ambit of the post

All Graduates on the FUSION Programme, have the advantage of being a part of a wider network of FUSION graduates with a clear plan for career development. A percentage of the Graduate’s time is allocated to personal development with the additional benefit of up to Stg£2,500 allocated for training and development. This may be used for attendance at training courses, conferences, seminars and exhibitions.

Advanced Management Diploma

All FUSION Graduates are expected to attend management training, designed specifically for FUSION Graduates and delivered by Smurfit Graduate School of Business in UCD. Its aims are to enhance Graduates’ personal, professional and managerial capabilities so that they can complete their FUSION Projects successfully and to equip them with the necessary skills for leadership roles in business. There will be a series of five, two-day workshops, however, a substantial part of the qualification will be work based. In addition, on successful completion of their training, each Graduate will obtain a Post Graduate Diploma in Management Practice which will be accredited by UCD.

Location

The successful candidate will be based at Nautical Enterprise Centre Ltd Ballineadig, Farran, Co. Cork, Rep of Ireland. The Graduate will also travel independently on occasions between Nautical Enterprise Centre Ltd and University of Ulster and between Nautical Enterprise Centre Ltd and UCD. Independent travel to other locations will also be required occasionally as the job dictates.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential

1. Min 2.1 Honours Degree (or equivalent) in Computer Science or related degree with a strong programming component

Desirable

1. Postgraduate qualification in Computer Science or a related area.

2. Knowledge of business applications and processes.

3. Experience in working in industry would be a distinct advantage.

4. Qualification or experience in statistics and/or transport.

5. Experience of a range of web development platforms and technologies.

FUSION Graduates who have completed the FUSION Post Graduate Diploma in Management need not apply.

Applications will also be considered from those candidates with relevant formal qualifications considered to be of an equivalent or higher standard to those stated. Applicants who do not possess one of the above formal qualifications and who consider that they have a relevant equivalent qualification must provide the necessary evidence in their application form.
